Only you know if your fiancee-to-be has something special in mind. If she does, it may be preferable to allow her to select a couple of settings from which you can ultimately choose.You might want her to also designate the shape of the center diamond she prefers and her choice of metals. Then you can return to the store at a later date and purchase the ring on your own, and she need not know the financial specifics. The right jeweler will also explain what is covered as far as repair, stone loss, resizing, refinishing the metal, etc.

Pick your jeweler wisely. In fact, “interview” jewelers so that you find the best fit for you. Your jeweler should act as your educator and guide throughout the process. Your questions should all be answered. You should by all means view diamonds under the microscope so that you can examine and understand their unique individual “fingerprints.” Compare stones. Every diamond has its own personality. Your jeweler should make you feel that you are the most important client in the world because you are, no matter how much you are spending. You will de-stress when you realize you are working with a patient and knowledgeable professional whose goal is to make you comfortable throughout the process and delighted with your final purchase.

Custom rings designed by Lucy Zimmerman at Roman Jewelers

For me, there is nothing more enjoyable than designing new one-of-a-kind jewelry and creating new cooking recipes.  The love for original jewelry comes to me from my Dad, and for cooking from my Mom.

Both, designing jewelry and cooking, usually start with inspiration.

Sometimes, I walk into a supermarket, look at the row of bright colorful vegetables, and decide on making a wonderful vegetable stew, mixing the vegetables with spices and a little bit of butter.

As for jewelry design, sometimes I see a stone that takes my breath away, and I imagine that stone in a one-of-a-kind ring.  Sometimes, it could be something as simple as a flower that makes me think of making a piece of jewelry.

Whatever inspires you let your imagination run wild, and allow it to take you to places you haven’t been before.

Just to share with you, here is one of my recent designs. I was fascinated by the beauty of this blue tanzanite with just a hint of purple in it when I first saw it at a jewelry show in Las Vegas. I purchased the stone and made sketches for it, imagining it first in a pendant, and then finally deciding on a ring.

As for cooking, here is my favorite recipe for Russian Blinis. My Mom taught me to make these delicious crepes when I was a little girl. I am happy to share it with you.

Russian Blinis

 Serve with sour cream, jelly, or sugar.

 INGREDIENTS:

• 1 cup all-purpose flour
• 3 eggs
• 2 cup milk
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon sugar
• 3 Tbsp vegetable oil

• In a large mixing bowl, beat eggs, salt, and sugar, lightly. Gradually add one cup of milk and whisk together. Add flour and mix together. Gradually, add one more cup of milk. Stir to combine. Add the oil; beat until very smooth. You can add more milk if needed to make batter liquid. 
• Heat a non-oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each crepe. Tilt the pan with a circular motion so that the batter coats the surface evenly.  
• Cook the crepe for about 1 minute, until the bottom is light brown. Loosen with a spatula, turn and cook the other side. Serve hot.

The ten finalist couples in the Roman Jewelers Wedding with co-owner of Roman Jewelers, Sophie Shor

Ten couples were chosen last week as finalists in the Roman Jewelers Wedding contest, presented by NJ Bride. The contest, sponsored by Roman Jewelers of Flemington and Bridgewater will award a free wedding to the couple who conducts the most successful fundraiser for a charity.

The winners were announced at a brunch at the Skylands Manor in Ringwood, NJ after being interviewed the day before by judges Sophie Shor and Lucy Zimmerman from Roman Jewelers and Kate Hartford of Cecilian Worldwide in Flemington.

“Without a doubt, these couples were chosen because they all were excited, in love, and most importantly determined and capable to make a positive impact for their charity. They will all do well,” said Sophie Shor, co-owner of Roman Jewelers. “Even those who do not have fundraising experience are looking forward to doing something meaningful together before they get married. This isn’t an easy contest…you really do have to do something significant before you win. But the payback is incredible.”

The winner of the contest will receive a free luxury wedding including a reception for 200 guests at The Villa at Mountain Lakes, diamond wedding bands from Roman Jewelers, a wedding gown from Donna Morello Wedding Gowns, entertainment by Craig Scott, floral arrangements by Conroy’s Creations, photography by Transposure Fine Art Photography and Invitations by Occasions. Videography, luxury transportation, skin care and exercise packages, hair and makeup, tuxedos, and a Hawaii honeymoon at the Hilton Waikoloa Village are also part of the package.

The next step in the contest is for the ten finalists to present their ideas in ‘good deed plans’ on August 2^nd at an event at Sphericality in Flemington. The couple who then implements their plan the most successfully will win the contest.

Many of the finalists have already worked with charities, from running in 5Ks to volunteering at hospitals, and with local and national charities like Special Olympics, March of Dimes, and food banks. Matt Kleinhans, 25, of Clinton was involved with the Hunterdon United Way and volunteers locally with his church. His fiancée, Gina Marie Mattei, 25, of Hillsborough has volunteered at the Adult Day Care Center in Finderne, for nearly 12 years.

One of the couples, Caroline Burghard, 26,  and Karl Erikson, 32, both of Branchburg Township, shared their love story, explaining how their impending wedding was predicted by a fortune teller during a date at a Greek Festival. “At the time, I did not put too much into it,” Caroline said. But after the couple lost touch for many years and then coincidentally met up again, it seemed as though the fortuneteller may have been right, the couple explained.

Kara Horner, 26, of Lambertville joked that the first guy that came “all the way to Lambertville” to take her on a date would be “the one.” Then Adam Bottino, 26, did just that! Furthermore, the engaged couple now calls Lambertville home.

Other finalists are: Samantha Holtz, 24, and Matthew West, 27, of Bernardsville; Lisa Zolnowski, 36, of  Flemington and John Sansone, 37, of Toms River; Michael Aschettino, 26,  and Jennifer Janosko, 29, of South River; Alexander Barthalis, 28, and Ann Marie Florek, 25, of North Brunswick and Manville, respectively; Lisa Rice, 28, and Patrick Cashin, 29, of Perth Amboy; Clelia Alfano, 26, and Brandon Pergola, 29, of Totowa and Jimmy Silvestri, 34, and Marah Winkler, 33, of Forked River.

A little more than two months ago, journalists, buyers and representatives from the world’s finest watch companies descended upon Baselworld to share, review and unveil the latest developments and innovations in watch technology and design. Roman Jewelers Partners with TLC stars Robert (L) and Jerry (R) Frungillo (www.frungillo.com) to host this year's Roman Jewelers Wedding presented by New Jersey Bride Magazine.

Mountain Lakes – Jerry and Robert Frungillo, stars of TLC TV show Masters of Reception have teamed up with a luxury jeweler and New Jersey Bride magazine to give away a free wedding. The contest, created by Roman Jewelers of Flemington and Bridgewater invites engaged couples to compete for the wedding by raising money or making a difference for one of ten New Jersey charities.

Known for throwing lavish weddings at their four locations – The Villa, Skylands Manor, The Mezzanine and Oakeside Mansion – Frungillo Caterers (www.frungillo.com) was chosen for TLC’s TV show over 100 other caterers. “They like how we go out of our way for our events and our brides and grooms. They witnessed it first hand and liked our family atmosphere and how Robert and I are so involved in what happens every day — selecting menus, purchasing fresh items, and training our staff ourselves. They like how we never say no, we just keep going and going until people are happy.”

The Frungillos were happy to get involved in a giveaway that gives back to the community. “It’s nice to help people out during these tough times,” explains Jerry, the older of the two brothers.

Along with developing a passion for doing whatever it takes to make their clients happy, the Frungillo brothers learned the importance of helping others early on. “If something ever happened to someone we knew, my father would be the first one to house offering to help out, we learned that lesson and are always helping out organizations and individuals,” admits Robert.

Although Frungillo Caterers has given away a wedding reception in the past, this contest is far different.  Now in it’s second year, The Roman Jewelers Wedding combines romance with philanthropy. To win the luxury wedding prize, brides and grooms-to-be will have the make a difference for ten New Jersey non-profit organizations.

Last year’s contest, created to celebrate Roman Jewelers’ 20^th Anniversary and help area charities raise funds and awareness in tough economic times raised nearly $100,000 for charity in 6 short weeks. “Our couples did such a good job. They worked so hard and the community is so thankful.  We don’t expect any less from this year’s contest,” said Roman Jewelers’ co- owner Sophie Shor.  “We’re expecting more,” she adds with a smile.

At auditions on July 17, 2010 at The Villa at Mountain Lakes, couples will tell their compelling love story to a panel of judges from 9am to 2:30pm. At 2:30, judges will announce twenty semifinalist couples that will have two weeks to develop a creative and original “Good Deed Plans” to help their chosen charity.

The ten best plans will be chosen to move on as finalists and compete to win the grand prize; a free luxury wedding including a reception with food and drinks for 200 guests at The Villa, diamond wedding bands from Roman Jewelers, a couture wedding gown from Donna Morello Wedding Gowns, entertainment by Craig Scott, floral arrangements by Conroy’s Creations, professional photography by Transposure Fine Art Photography and invitations by Occasions. Videography, luxury transportation, skin care and exercise packages, hair and makeup, tuxedos, and a honeymoon at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on Hawaii’s big island are also all included.

Finalist couples will have approximately eight weeks to implement their “Good Deed Plans on behalf their Charitable Partners which include Make-A-Wish Foundation of New Jersey, Special Olympics New Jersey, Anderson House, Woodlands Wildlife Refuge, America’s Grow-a-Row, The Arc of Hunterdon, Hunterdon Art Museum, Raritan Valley Habitat for Humanity, SAFE in Hunterdon and the Hunterdon County YMCA.

 The winning couple will be announced at Flemington’s Renaissance Plaza in October. They will be chosen based on the couple’s love story, their dedication to helping others, the impact they’ve had on charity and the results of their Good Deed.

We are constantly asked, “Where did the idea of the Roman Jewelers Wedding Contest come from?” It was quite simple, actually. Last year, Roman Jewelers was celebrating their 20^th year in business. Co-store owner, Sophie Shor, wanted to celebrate! The jewelry business is all about love, and the Shor’s are all about philanthropy.

With those two simple thoughts, the idea was born.  “What could be more romantic than a wedding?” said Mrs. Shor.  In a world where “Bridezillas” get all the attention, Mrs. Shor thought how uplifting it would be to show the positive sides in young couple and create a new generation of philanthropists. Besides, what better way to start a life together, than with the memories of doing so much good for others?

The situation with the economy furthered the contests relevance. “Everyone was being hit hard, but charities were being hit the hardest,” Mrs. Shor added.  Last year’s contest raised nearly $100,000 in six short weeks and the charity partners were surprised and thrilled. “The outpouring from the charities and local residents was overwhelming. It brought everyone together,” said Mrs. Shor.

Even the couples that did not win the wedding last year, felt like winners. They were all very appreciative of the lessons they learned and the charities that they befriended. The couples felt great about themselves and many still work with their charities today and plan to continue on in the future.

So, when it was all over, Mrs. Shor said, “Let’s do it again and make it even bigger and better.”
