Let’s celebrate May by learning about this month’s birthstone – the emerald. The radiant gemstone ranges in ravishing shades of green, which include blue to yellow undertones. Generally, deep green emeralds are more coveted than diamonds.

The name “emerald” was derived from the Greek root “smaragdos”, which literally means “green gemstone”. Some of the earliest people to appreciate emerald were ancient Egyptians who excavated the gemstone near the Red Sea, in a location now known as “Cleopatra’s Mines”.

Much like Cleopatra, the most famous fashionista of ancient times, Hollywood’s most glamorous gals, including Angelina Jolie and Elizabeth Taylor, have adorned themselves with emerald jewelry on the red carpet. On Tuesday, Christie’s auction house in New York sold a rare 9-carat pink diamond for $15.7 million! The diamond belonged to the estate of philanthropist and reclusive heiress Huguette M. Clark. We are always surprised to hear from friends and customers that they are no longer wearing their engagement/wedding rings because they feel they are outdated!. The good news is that Roman Jewelers has brought back their popular remount event–Remount, Redesign, or Trade Up Saturday April 28 and Sunday April 29th. The event is featuring an expanded collection from designer Simon G., so customers will see more merchandise than ever. There are several reasons women no longer wear and love their diamond jewelry, including just not liking it because it is outdated. Whether it is the cut, the color metal or even the size of the diamond, women are choosing to leave their rings in their jewelry box instead of enjoying them. This is why we’ve decided to hold an event where customers can Remount, Refashion and Trade up or Trade in their diamonds. The event will be held April 28^th in Flemington & April 29 in Bridgewater.

Remounting your existing diamond ring gives it new life so that you will love and wear it again. Updating your setting, also protects your diamond which may currently be in an older setting with worn prongs and gold. Now, is the time.

You may even choose to create a new custom piece. Maybe you want to use several heirloom pieces or stones from other jewelry or design something meaningful to commemorate an anniversary or life event.

Roman Jewelers of Flemington has added Tissot to their collection of fine Swiss watches available at their dedicated watch store on State Route 12.

Roman & Sophie Shor, the store’s owners, have been working on growing their watch store so that it is, “precisely that…a well-rounded, complete, one-stop location for watches with knowledgeable sales staff. Meet Roman Jewelers' Sales Associate Lauren Baker

Lauren Baker, of Branchburg, NJ is a recent hire at Roman Jewelers’ Flemington location.  Lauren started with the company five months ago and has been particularly struck by how rewarding her job has been so far. “Selling jewelry is really fulfilling because you feel like part of a family. Not just the family here at the store, but also part of a larger family with customers. It is an honor to be a part of the celebrations in people’s lives, “ she says. Lauren is not only referring to the many engagements that start at Roman Jewelers, but also the birthdays, religious celebrations, holidays and moments in that are often shared with her by her customers.

Lauren also enjoys the smiles she sees on her customers when they receive a new piece of jewelry and she finds comfort in knowing that the jewelry she sells will be enjoyed for many years to come and even in future generations. “Fine jewelry is not disposable. There is something truly beautiful in that,” she adds.

This is Lauren’s first experience working in the jewelry industry. She previously served as a tutor and has a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. According to Lauren, her education background has been an asset to her job at Roman Jewelers because there is so much to learn and so much to knowledge to share about jewelry; from understanding precious metals and colored stones to the information needed to really be able to appreciate and then educate customers on diamonds.

“There is an art and science to it all—familiarity about the creation and qualities of stones and metals are a requirement, but recognizing the art in the design of each piece and it’s one-of-a-kind qualities is important, too. I like learning it all and then being able to share it.”

Lauren has also taken her teaching on the road. She has been providing community presentations to area organizations and senior centers. Recently, Lauren did a seminar on diamonds and will be doing another in the next couple weeks on the history and design of Faberge Eggs.

In her spare time, Lauren likes to scrapbook and spend time with her friends, family her cats, Eddie and Meiko, along with her tortoise, Greenbrook.
